The Sunfire King by Sylvia Mercedes

My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars

Valera is determined to save her husband and she will walk the space between the Sun and Moon to find him.

The Sunfire King is the captivating sequel in the “Of Candlelight and Shadows” duology. If you love magical worlds, adventures, and proactive heroines, then you have found your book.

The first book, The Moonfire Bride, ended on a heart-wrenching cliffhanger but in the sequel, we follow Valera on her adventure through enchanting worlds and otherworldly trials. Her transformation as a character is A-mazing. She goes from scared and unsure to brave and daring through sheer determination. I rooted for her the whole time and cheered when she triumphed.

Although the books are marketed as romance, some may be surprised at how much the story is focused on the adventure in this book.

There is not a lot of physical interaction between the love interests, but I enjoyed every minute of Valera’s journey. Her chemistry with Erolas could have been a little more refined but, I still thought the ending to be sweet and satisfying. Another “issue” (I say this loosely) that I had was my curiosity with Valera’s sister’s fate and why it was not addressed as well in this book, but then I found out that Brielle has her own story and so I will be interested in reading that in the future.

One of my favorite things about the book is how it is written. The details swept me off my feet and transported me into a different world. I love the attention to character detail and the focus on the “why” the characters do what they do. Mercedes is a gifted author and I applaud her for her work.

Overall you will love this book if you love:

  • Proactive heroines that learn valuable lessons along their journey
  • Crazy, magical adventures
  • The heroine saving the hero
  • Fae
  • Satisfying endings

“How— How do you—” His voice is rough, grim. Full of pain. “How do you know my name?”

“I am your wife. Your Moonfire Bride. I’ve crossed the worlds to find you. I’ve traveled the path between Sun and Moon, walked the very edge of Hell.”
